Lenguas Modernas https://lenguasmodernas.uchile.cl/index.php/LM <p><em>Lenguas Modernas&nbsp;</em>is a biannual refereed journal. It publishes articles in the fields of acquisition and development of the mother tongue, acquisition and learning of second and foreign languages, language and cognition, and discourse analysis. Contributions can inform of findings originating in experimentation, observation, and analysis in these areas, and also of theories that underlie studies in these fields. Similarly, contributions can report on the state of the art in the areas mentioned above, or focus on proposals that, because of their generality, can contribute to transdisciplinary approaches to the questions under study.</p> <p><em>Lenguas Modernas&nbsp;</em>is published by the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the University of Chile. The objective of this article is to describe acoustically the six vowel sounds in the Mapudungun language spoken in Chile. Given this purpose, 31 Mapudungun speakers were recorded: 17 women and 14 men, from Biobío and La Araucania regions. The values of formants for each vowel produced by the speakers (F1, F2, and F3) were obtained and compared to reference values for Chilean Spanish. Results show that the formant values of the 5 vowels shared by Mapudungun and Spanish suggest significant differences related to the acoustic production. However, they seem to be the most similar to Chilean Spanish among other Spanish variants. Concerning the “sixth vowel”, the results obtained in this research classify it as a back vowel, being located in a lower position in the vowel acoustic space. The aim is to examine how written and visual verbal choices construct certain intersubjective positionings about the Mapuche experience in the colonization of Chile. From the appraisal model (Martin and White, 2005; Oteíza, 2023; Oteíza and Pinuer, 2019), with a focus on engagement, and the grammar of visual design (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2021), the 5th grade text distributed in 2023 by the Chilean Ministry of Education is studied. This edition incorporates a component in verbal historical evidentiality, complexifying the negotiation of intersubjectivity. The colonial period is constructed through verbal and visual testimonies that reinforce a dominant narrative centered on the colonizers’ gaze. It is evident that the Mapuche are positioned from the standpoint of resistance and savagery, while the Spanish as promoters of a legitimizing policy of colonization. Following a qualitative and intercultural methodological approach, within the framework of linguistic anthropology and the concept of “linguistic ideology”, through interviews and focus groups, the discourse of different institutional and community actors about the Quechua language and its role in the formation of the sociolinguistic community. The data analysis was developed through the Atlas Ti software, following the precepts of grounded theory, emerging various linguistic ideologies about their language - linking to roots and ancestry, identity and purism -, its uses and types of speakers that make up the community and their sociolinguistic trajectories of loss and recovery, within the framework of contact/conflict with Spanish, in an x-ray of the sociolinguistic reality of Quechua in Chile. Cristián Lagos Fernández Copyright (c) 2025 Lenguas Modernas 2025-08-19 2025-08-19 65 63 88 A collocational study of B1 spanish as a foreign language textbooks https://lenguasmodernas.uchile.cl/index.php/LM/article/view/80316 This paper analyses the treatment of collocations in B1 Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) textbooks, with the aim of identifying the collocations present, classifying them according to their typology, restriction -prototypical and non-prototypical- (Higueras García, 2006) and determining the semantic fields. The methodological approaches used for their teaching are also examined. To achieve this, the research is based on the analysis of seven textbooks used at the Language Centre of the University of Almeria, including both textbooks and exercise books. The results show that collocations are present in most of the manuals analysed, with one standing out. Nevertheless, it is observed that the concept of collocation is not approached from a theoretical perspective, which sometimes makes it difficult both for students to learn it and for teachers to teach it. Rosario Lisciandro Copyright (c) 2025 Lenguas Modernas 2025-08-19 2025-08-19 65 89 109 phrasal verbs and tiktok: effects of a mall methodology on the oral performance of prospective english teachers https://lenguasmodernas.uchile.cl/index.php/LM/article/view/80317 This quasi-experimental research with a control group studied the impact of a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) sequence using phrasal verbs on TikTok to enhance the oral performance of pre-service EFL teachers from B2 to C1 (CEFR) level. The findings revealed a statistically significant increase in the frequency of phrasal verb usage in the oral interviews with the experimental group. Additionally, a tendency toward more advanced use of these units was observed in the posttest. The correlation between the frequency of phrasal verb usage and higher performance in IELTS-style interviews stresses the relevance of these lexicogrammatical units to achieve higher competence in the foreign language. Partiendo de la necesidad de una mayor inclusión de género en traducción, presentamos este artículo de investigación, centrado en la traducción inglés-español de un corpus de elementos científicos, que fueron extraídos de 4 reconocidas revistas en lengua inglesa, las cuales presentan las últimas innovaciones en ciencia. Posteriormente, realizamos una investigación lexicográfica, buscando cada elemento terminológico en diccionarios científicos monolingües, diccionarios científicos bilingües (inglés-español), así como en diccionarios bilingües (inglés-español) no especializados. Por otro lado, también propusimos nuestras propias traducciones para el corpus de la presente investigación. Los resultados de la misma ponen de manifiesto cómo las fuentes lexicográficas investigadas no presentaron un número significativo de traducciones sin marca de género, mientras que nuestras propuestas de traducción demuestran cómo la lengua castellana puede recurrir a una serie de propuestas traductológicas de interés para poder emplear un castellano inclusivo, sin saltarse las reglas gramaticales.
