The aim of this paper is to propose a prototype that, quantitatively, defines the
concept of verbal periphrasis. For that, we divide the text into two parts. On the
one hand, after remarking all the problems on the concept “Verbal Periphrase”, we
describe the prototype model and the reasons why we should accept a quantitative
perspective. On the other hand, we attempt to build the prototype of the concept of
Verbal periphrase, applied to three Verbal Periphrases in “Laboratory Sentences”,
taking into account the most relevant syntactic and semantic features –scored, just
to get an idea of the degree of approach to the pattern. The main conclusion is
that, although there is lot of research to be done, this proposal can offer a way of
improving the research in other metalinguistic categories
