Abstract

The last Chilean presidential elections have permitted that the political opposition takes the power after 50 years. This fact has defined the ending of two decades in which the Concertation, a political coalition of center-left, had the administration of the government. This article deals with this change and focuses on three factors that can explain it. First, it indicates that the falling of the Concertation is explained for the weakness of political parties gathered in this political coalition. Second, it is possible explaining this change as a direct consequence of the conflicts within these political parties which is explained mainly for the decomposition of its internal democratic mechanisms. Finally, a third factor that is possible telling is the change in the character of the opposition that passed from a passive action to a beligerant action.
