In this paper we analyze some contributions made by intonation –
specifically pitch level choices- to the organization of interactive discourse. The
corpus comprises narrative fragments embedded in 60 casual conversations among
university students aged between 18- 28 from different universities in Argentina.
We adopt the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Liguistics (Halliday y
Matthiessen 2004, Martin y Rose 2008) and the Theory of Discourse Intonation
(Brazil 1997, Granato 2005). We analyze the meaning projected by pitch level both
at the micro level of the utterance and/or dyad and at the meso level of narrative
fragments. The analysis reveals that pitch level choices at the local level make a
substantial contribution to the co-construction of coherence; while at the meso level
they contribute to the characterization of narrative fragments
